Is Money Everything? What I Learned When Emotions Lost to Currency

A few years ago, if you'd asked me "Is money everything?"
I’d have said no without blinking.

I believed in emotions. In love. In friendship. I believed that people cared more about connection than currency.
I was wrong.

Not because money isn’t important it is. We need it to live, to grow, to support ourselves.
But I didn’t realize how easily it could overpower things I thought were sacred.
When Money Walks In, Relationships Walk Out?

I’ve seen it happen.

People who once stood by you like a rock...
Who promised, "We’re in this together"
Who took your kindness, time, even sacrifices
Change completely the moment money becomes part of the equation.

Suddenly, your worth is measured not in memories or moments,
But in how much you gave or didn’t.
Not in love but in loans.

And worse?
Even the good you did for them becomes...
Twisted. Forgotten. Ignored.

What Hurts More Than Losing Money?

Losing Meaning.
It’s not the money.
It’s how quickly it erases everything else.

How easily people forget warmth when faced with wealth.
How fast they trade words for receipts.
How loudly silence speaks when you ask:
"Was I ever more than just support until the money ran out?"

So...Is Money Everything?

No. But here’s the truth:

For many, it’s enough to forget everything else.

And that’s what breaks me a little.
Because I still want to believe in people who value you even when you have nothing to offer.
In love that doesn’t keep a balance sheet.
In friendship that doesn’t ask for ROI.

But maybe, what I really need to believe in now is me.

Because I’m learning...
That your kindness is still priceless, even when others can’t see its value.
That your heart has currency, even when others choose cash.

And that walking away from people who choose money over meaning is its own kind of wealth.
What You Can Take Away:

Money is important.

But when someone shows you it’s everything to them, believe them and protect your peace.

You don’t have to harden your heart. But you do have to honour your value.

And sometimes, losing people like that is how you finally find yourself.
